While roaming around in D.C. I spent two days enamored with the art I found at the American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery. I still didn’t see everything! It is an incredible museum, and moreover free. Additionally on the third floor is the Luce Foundation with three MORE stories of racks and racks of art to gaze upon. My art cup overfloweth…
When you are there make sure you check out the folk art section of the museum. The work there has a sincerity and whimsy that is often hard to find in the more “educated” realms of the arts. A delightful quote I found on a wall was: “Art is a birth, and you can’t go to a teacher and find out how to be born… you have to struggle… until that image, the one that comes out of your need to create, emerges.” (Malcha Zeldis, 1978) Very true indeed.
Here are their various sites so you can do some investigation on line. They’ve done a great job making a lot of art accessible from your lap top.
